ORIGIN OF CAMU CAMU
The camu camu (Myrciaria dubia HBK), belonging to the Myrtaceae family, is a wild bushy fruit tree from the Amazon, which grows on the flooded banks of rivers and lakes or lagoons with dark waters and can remain completely submerged in water for four or five months. In Latin America it is found on the banks of the Amazon, Ucayali, Marañón, Napo, Tigre, Curaray, Yavarí and Tahuayo in Peru; Putumayo and Inírida in Colombia; and also in the upper Orinoco basin in Venezuela. The greatest concentration and diversity of populations is in the Peruvian Amazon. Camu camu is a fruit with great genetic diversity, which has a high content of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) whose values are between 2,000 and 2,994 milligrams per 10 grams (mg/g) of fresh pulp. Likewise, in the language of the Shipibo-Conibo peoples, the Myrciaria dubia is known; like camo-camo; and uses the pigment from its mature shell to dye vegetable fibers of the Chambira (Astrocarium chambira). Camu camu was initially considered as a natural source of vitamin C by Ferreyra in 1959 in his monthly report at the La Molina Agricultural Experimental Station.
TRADITIONAL USE OF CAMU CAMU
Also as analgesic, antiviral and antioxidant. Recent studies catalog it at 2,700 mg/100 g of average pulp, exceeding traditionally recognized fruits such as orange and lemon by up to fifty times. In addition, its shell contains abundant natural dye whose use is incipient, requiring more research for the full use of this fruit.

BENEFITS OF CAMU CAMU
HOW TO USE CAMU CAMU
It is recommended to consume an average of ¼ or ½ teaspoon per day of camu camu powder or 3 capsules or tablets x 500 mg per day. These doses provide 80% of the necessary daily dose of vitamin C. Because it tends to have a slightly bitter astringent taste it is often mixed into fruit-based smoothies, juices and sweet foods or desserts. It’s a great addition to lemonade, ice cream and citrus flavored tart, just like our lemon bar recipe. However, camu camu, being considered a nutraceutical, does not require a medical prescription, and the proven harmlessness of camu camu facilitates its use. Clinical studies are still pending to standardize the best extraction technique, the preparation of the final product, as well as the optimal dose to obtain the desired effect.
It can be used in jams, jellies, desserts or drinks. In medicinal home remedies, the berry is known to be useful as an antiviral for the treatment of various infections.
Aside from these local South American regions, the camu fruit was essentially unknown internationally until the 1950s when it was first nutritionally analyzed by the Institute of Nutrition and the Ministry of Public Health of Peru. These studies revealed an exceptionally high amount of vitamin C content in the berry, with results documenting 2,800-3,000 milligrams of vitamin C per 100 grams of pulp. Since these findings, camu camu has been valued as one of the highest natural plant-based sources of all this important antioxidant.
SIDE EFFECTS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS OF CAMU CAMU
There are no contraindications to adding camu camu to your diet. An excess of vitamin C is not toxic, but prolonged use of high amounts can cause gastrointestinal disturbances or diarrhea. Anyone who has been advised not to take too much vitamin C should exercise caution, such people with kidney stones. For most people, adding the superfood camu camu to their diet is a good idea.
